Deferring pupils

Occasionally, a pupil may start Reception a year later than usual. This guide explains how to record an agreed delayed start in Insight.

As described in the DfE Guidance on handling admission requests for summer-born children:

Children are not required to attend school until they reach compulsory school age. Children born from 1 April to 31 August – known as summer-born children – do not need to start school until the September after their fifth birthday, a year after they could first have started school. A parent may request their summer-born child is admitted out of their normal age group at this point – to reception rather than year 1.

These instructions apply to pupils starting Reception for the first time who would normally be in Year 1 based on their date of birth.

If you have a pupil repeating a year group or an older pupil who may already have some statutory data entered please contact our support team for assistance.

To defer a pupil, open their profile page in Pupils and click Edit Profile.

On the Edit Profile page click Change Year Group.

Select the desired year group from the menu, likely Reception and click Save.

The pupil will now be recorded as in your selected year group and will automatically move up to the next year group for the following academic year.
