Assembly - Connecting SIMS

This guide is for SIMS applications that are based on a server in your school.

Warning - Depending on your schools settings you may need to contact your IT provider to complete this set up. You will also need a person with SIMs Admin access.

Step 1 - Sign up to Assembly

1 - Go to the Assembly Platform sign up page by clicking here.

2 - Please complete the registration with your school/work email address.

You can find the invite code in Insight by going to Admin --> Manage Pupils --> Update Pupils --> Assembly --> the red text is the invite code. (Please keep this page open you will need it later)

Ensure that you have read and accepted the terms of service, then click Sign up.

3 - An email will be sent to the address you signed up with. Click the link in that email to activate your Assembly account.

4 - Leave this page open we now need to authorise the connection.

Step 2 - Authorise Insight

1 - An Insight admin user needs to go to Admin --> Manage Pupils --> Update Pupils --> Assembly

2 - This will then take you to a page asking about scopes. Please have a look at the optional scopes as you may wish to also bring across the pupils ethnicity and the SEN provisions. You can always change these at a later date.

Step 3 - Create a SIMs User.

1 - Open SIMS and navigate to Focus > System Manager > Manage Users.

2. Click on New at the top of the screen.

3. Enter Surname: Assembly and Forename: User for the user you are setting up then click Continue.

4. In section 2 Login Details you will see the username and password that have just been created, change the username to Username: Assembly.User

Make a note of the password: you'll need this later.

5. In Section 3.Groups is where the user is given access to data in SIMS. The groups needed for the sync with Assembly are:

                                                               i.      Administration Assistant

                                                             ii.      Class Teacher

                                                           iii.      Personnel Officer

                                                           iv.      Senior Management Team

                                                             v.      Third Party Reporting

                                                           vi.      Assessment Operator

Setting up Groups is an important step which ensures the User has sufficient access to pull information into the platform.

6. Once the user looks correct click save and the account will be created.

Step 4 - Install the Assembly connector.

This is where you might find that you need an IT technician if you don't have the permission to download the application or it fails to download.

1 - On the assembly platform (Sign in link here if you have navigated away from the page) please click the connector tab and then the green 'Download SIMs Assembly Installer' button.

2 - Run/Open the .exe and click Get Started when prompted.

3 - Click Connect (no details needed)

If step 3 fails then follow step 9 on this guide.

4 - Click Next Step.

5 -  Enter your unique Key and Secret to authenticate your connection. These can be found on the same page as the download button and by scrolling to the bottom of the page. You can copy by highlighting the text and use the keyboard shortcuts 'Ctrl' + 'c' to copy and 'Ctrl' + 'v' to paste.

6 - Click next steps.
